With proper design, LED stadium lights can operate over a wide temperature range, but there are still some precautions to take in extreme climates.
Extreme Cold (below -30°C): While LED chips are more efficient at low temperatures, the electrolyte viscosity in the electrolytic capacitors of the driver increases at low temperatures, potentially leading to starting difficulties or unstable output. Choose a wide-temperature driver specifically rated for -40°C to +50°C and avoid using electrolytic capacitors with poor low-temperature performance (solid-state capacitors can be used).
Additionally, cable sheaths become brittle in extremely cold conditions; cold-resistant rubber cables (such as H05RR-F or -40°C rated) should be used. A low-temperature start-up test is recommended before installation.
Extreme Heat (above +50°C): High temperatures accelerate LED light decay and driver aging. An efficient heat dissipation design is necessary, and ensure the lights do not operate in enclosed spaces or under direct sunlight. Consider installing sunshades. For the Middle East, models with active fan cooling can be selected, and dust should be cleaned regularly. If the ambient temperature exceeds 60°C, consider placing the driver power supply in a cool, shaded location.
High Altitude: Above 3000 meters, the air is thin, reducing heat dissipation and requiring derating (typically 5-10% derating for every 1000 meters increase in altitude).
Summary: When purchasing, always confirm the operating temperature range of the lighting fixture and inquire with the manufacturer about application examples in high-altitude, extremely cold, or extremely hot regions. If climatic conditions exceed the normal range, it is recommended to choose industrial-grade or special-purpose LED stadium lights.
