What to do with LED stadium lights after their lifespan ends?

After reaching L70 (usually around 10 years), LED stadium lights don't necessarily fail completely; their brightness simply decreases by 30%. At this point, the following methods can be used:

First, continue using them in low-demand applications. For example, relocate retired stadium lights to training fields, parking lots, warehouses, or other locations with lower illumination requirements to utilize their remaining energy.

Second, refurbish the entire light. Replace the LED light engine (light panel) and driver, retaining the housing and bracket. Many manufacturers offer modular designs, allowing for easy upgrades to next-generation, more efficient light sources.

Third, recycle materials. The main body of LED lights consists of aluminum (housing and heat sink), copper (cables), steel (bracket), glass (mask), and a small number of electronic components. All these materials can be recycled. Aluminum and copper have high recycling value.

Fourth, dispose of electronic waste. The circuit board in the driver is considered electronic waste and should be disposed of by a qualified recycling company to avoid indiscriminate disposal.

Fifth, be aware of hazardous materials. Although LED lights do not contain mercury, they may contain trace amounts of lead (in solder) and flame retardants, and must be disposed of in compliance with regulations.

Sixth, manufacturer recycling programs. Some major brands offer old light recycling services, potentially with trade-in discounts.

In short, the disposal of LED stadium lights should adhere to environmental principles, maximizing reuse and recycling. During the design and procurement phase, manufacturers can be requested to provide a Product Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and recycling plan.
