What are the components of an LED street light?

A typical LED street light consists of the following parts:

1.  Light Source Module (LED Chips): Typically composed of multiple LED chips (0.5W–3W each) soldered in a matrix onto an aluminum-based PCB. The chip brand (e.g., CREE, OSRAM, Nichia, Lumileds, Samsung, Epistar) and packaging technology determine luminous efficacy and lifespan.

2.  LED Driver (Power Supply): Converts AC mains power (typically 100–277V, 50/60Hz) into the constant DC current required by the LEDs. The driver should feature high efficiency (≥90%), high power factor (≥0.95), lightning protection (4kV/6kV), protections against over-voltage/over-current/short-circuits, and dimming interfaces (0-10V, DALI, PWM, etc.). The driver is the component most prone to failure in an LED street light.

3.  Heat Sink: Usually made of die-cast aluminum or extruded aluminum profiles with cooling fins to conduct and dissipate heat generated by the LEDs. Thermal design directly impacts the rate of lumen depreciation and the overall lifespan.

4.  Optical Lens: A secondary optical component—typically made of PMMA or PC—that redistributes the light emitted by the LEDs to form a rectangular light pattern (asymmetric light distribution) suitable for road lighting. The lens must be UV-resistant, heat-resistant, and have a light transmittance of ≥90%.

5.  Housing: Usually made of die-cast or drawn aluminum with a surface coating; it protects internal components and aids in heat dissipation. The housing must meet IP65 or IP66 standards for water and dust resistance.

6.  Mounting Bracket: Used to secure the street light to the pole; typically an adjustable-angle (-15° to +15°) sleeve-style or side-entry bracket.

7.  Cables and Junction Box: Internal wiring and waterproof connectors. 8. Smart controller (optional): Built-in or external communication module (Zigbee, LoRa, NB-IoT, 4G) for receiving commands from the control center and uploading status data. These components work together to ensure the long-term, stable operation of the LED street light in outdoor environments.
