Measuring lumen depreciation is a key method for determining whether LED stadium lights need replacement. The accurate measurement procedure is as follows:
Step 1: Establish a baseline. After the newly installed lights have been commissioned (or after they have stabilized following 100 hours of operation), designate several fixed measurement points within the venue (at least 20 points, evenly distributed, are recommended). Use a Class 1 illuminance meter (accuracy ±2%) to measure the illuminance at each point under standard voltage and record the initial values. Also, record the ambient temperature and humidity at the time.
Step 2: Conduct periodic measurements. Repeat the measurements every six months or annually—during the same season and at the same time of day (e.g., 8:00 PM in summer)—using the same illuminance meter and at the same locations. Note: Clean the surface of the light fixtures before measurement and ensure all fixtures are functioning correctly.
Step 3: Calculate lumen depreciation. For each measurement point, calculate lumen depreciation as: (Initial Illuminance - Current Illuminance) / Initial Illuminance × 100%. Use the average value across all points to represent the overall lumen depreciation. Additionally, monitor the value at the point of maximum depreciation (to assess the deterioration of uniformity).
Step 4: Rule out factors other than lumen depreciation. If illuminance drops significantly but the fixtures have logged very few operating hours (e.g., <2,000 hours), the cause might be dust accumulation, low supply voltage, or driver failure. Clean the fixtures and check the voltage and drivers before re-measuring.
Step 5: Measure color temperature. Use a color temperature meter to track changes in light color; a color temperature shift exceeding ±300K should also be considered an indicator of degradation.
Step 6: Make a decision. When the average lumen depreciation reaches 30% (L70), consider replacing the entire batch of lights or individual units showing severe depreciation. If uniformity no longer meets event requirements (e.g., the point of maximum depreciation exceeds 50%), replacement is necessary even if the average depreciation is less than 30%.
While professional third-party testing agencies can use integrating spheres or goniophotometers for precise measurements of individual fixtures, the on-site method described above is sufficient for making maintenance decisions.
