How should LED stadium lights be aimed to achieve competition-grade lighting?

Aiming (adjusting the angle) of LED stadium lights is one of the most critical steps in stadium lighting design. Incorrect aiming can severely compromise illuminance uniformity and increase glare. Below are the basic steps and principles:

Step 1: Determine the aiming point for each luminaire. Professional lighting design software calculates the optimal aiming point for each light—usually defined by coordinates (e.g., aiming from a specific pole toward the field center or a specific zone)—based on field dimensions, pole locations, mounting heights, and luminaire light distribution curves.

Step 2: Physical adjustment. Using an inclinometer or level, adjust the horizontal and vertical angles of the luminaires to the specified values ​​according to the design drawings. For narrow-beam luminaires, the aiming error must be within ±1°; for medium-beam luminaires, the error can be within ±2°.

Step 3: Grouped illumination testing. Do not turn on all lights at once; instead, test them in groups (e.g., testing the light towers at each of the four corners separately). Use an illuminance meter to measure actual illuminance at various grid points on the field and compare the results with the design values.

Step 4: Fine-tuning. If illuminance in certain areas is insufficient or excessive, slightly adjust the angles of the relevant luminaires (adjusting by no more than 1° at a time) and re-measure.

Step 5: Glare verification. Observe from the eye level of athletes and camera positions to check for direct glare. If glare is detected, install glare shields or fine-tune the angles to direct the light further downward.

Step 6: Locking and recording. Once all angles are confirmed, tighten the mounting bolts and mark the angles on the luminaires to facilitate restoration after future maintenance. For large venues (with over 100 lights), the use of laser aiming devices or drones to assist with positioning is recommended.

Note: Aiming must be performed by trained professionals at night, as light beam patterns are difficult to see during the day. In practice, multiple iterations may be required to achieve the designed uniformity. Therefore, procurement contracts should include clauses for on-site commissioning and illuminance acceptance testing.
