What is the typical height of stadium light poles?

The height of stadium light poles (or light towers) varies depending on the type of venue, lighting requirements, and the surrounding environment. Common scenarios include:

Small community soccer fields (7-a-side): Pole heights are typically 12–15 meters. Standard 11-a-side soccer fields (training level): Corner pole heights range from 15 to 18 meters.

Professional soccer stadiums (broadcast-ready): Corner light towers can reach heights of 25–35 meters, while additional lights are mounted on catwalks atop the stands at heights of approximately 15–25 meters.

Large multi-purpose stadiums (track and field plus soccer): Due to the added width from the running track, light towers often need to be 35–45 meters tall to ensure light coverage reaches the far side of the track.

Rugby fields: Due to the larger playing area (100m × 70m), light tower heights are often in the 40–50 meter range.

Indoor stadiums (basketball arenas, ice hockey rinks): Since there is a roof, lights are usually mounted on overhead catwalks at heights of approximately 10–20 meters. Beyond height, the structural strength of the pole is critical; it must withstand the weight of the lighting fixtures (a single tower might hold 20–60 lights, with a total weight of 1–5 tons) and wind loads (typically designed to withstand Beaufort scale 12 winds). Poles are usually constructed from polygonal tapered steel, hot-dip galvanized for corrosion resistance, and anchored in deep underground foundations.

When determining pole height, lighting designers consider several factors:

① Preventing glare from the lights from entering the field of view of athletes and spectators (minimum downward angle requirements);

② Ensuring adequate vertical illuminance at the edges of the field;

③ Coordinating with surrounding buildings and aviation height restrictions;

④ Ease of installation and maintenance (requiring lifting systems or access ladders).

Therefore, pole height is not determined arbitrarily but is optimized through lighting simulations.
