Why do some sports venues choose hybrid lighting systems?

A hybrid lighting system involves the simultaneous use of LED fixtures and traditional metal-halide (or high-pressure sodium) lamps within the same venue. This approach is primarily adopted in the following transitional scenarios:

First, phased retrofitting due to limited budgets. If a venue cannot secure the full funding for an LED upgrade at once, it may replace fixtures in key locations (such as the main broadcast camera positions) with LEDs while retaining the original metal-halide lamps in other areas. Both types are operated simultaneously to meet illuminance requirements, with further replacements scheduled for the next fiscal year.

Second, leveraging specific characteristics of traditional lamps. For instance, in extremely cold regions, metal-halide lamps generate significant heat during operation, which helps melt snow or maintain turf temperature; conversely, LEDs emit little heat, potentially leading to snow accumulation. A hybrid setup allows for meeting both lighting and snow-melting needs.

Third, specific spectral requirements. Some metal-halide lamps emit specific spectra (such as ultraviolet light) to promote turf growth or meet the needs of certain plants—characteristics that are difficult for LEDs to fully replicate.

Fourth, avoiding waste when existing metal-halide lamps have not yet reached the end of their service life. Venues may retain functional lamps while supplementing them with LEDs to boost illuminance, switching entirely to LEDs only after the metal-halide lamps naturally fail.

Fifth, emergency backup. Old metal-halide lamps can serve as a temporary backup in the event of a widespread LED system failure (such as driver malfunction). However, hybrid systems also have distinct drawbacks: complex controls (requiring two separate dimming systems), inconsistent color temperatures (cool white LEDs vs. warm yellow metal-halide lamps), and complicated maintenance (requiring spare parts for both types of lamps).

In the long run, the vast majority of venues still prefer a complete transition to LED lighting. If you are planning a hybrid lighting solution, it is advisable to consult a professional lighting designer to evaluate the pros and cons.
