Many buyers fall into the following traps when selecting LED streetlights:
Pitfall 1: Focusing solely on wattage rather than lumens. It is a misconception that higher wattage always equals greater brightness; in reality, LEDs vary significantly in luminous efficacy. A 100W lamp (at 140 lm/W) can be brighter and more energy-efficient than a 150W lamp (at 80 lm/W). The correct approach is to compare luminous flux (lumens) and light distribution curves.
Pitfall 2: Assuming "brighter is better." Excessive illuminance not only wastes electricity but also creates glare and light pollution. Illuminance levels should be selected strictly in accordance with the standards for the specific road classification.
Pitfall 3: Ignoring uniformity. Focusing only on average illuminance while overlooking minimum illuminance can result in a "zebra-stripe" effect on the road surface, which compromises driving safety.
Pitfall 4: Assuming all LED streetlights are waterproof. Many low-cost products lack an adequate IP (Ingress Protection) rating, leading to water ingress and failure after only a few months of use. Always verify an IP rating of IP65 or higher, supported by third-party test reports.
Pitfall 5: Neglecting the quality of the LED driver. The driver is the "heart" of an LED streetlight, and inferior drivers are the primary cause of malfunctions. It is best to choose drivers from reputable, well-known brands.
Pitfall 6: Overlooking color temperature and color rendering index (CRI). Excessively high color temperatures (above 6500K) can be harsh on the eyes and offer poor penetration through rain or fog; a low CRI (<70) leads to color distortion.
Pitfall 7: Prioritizing the lowest price. A low initial purchase price often translates to higher maintenance costs and increased electricity consumption. Buyers should instead calculate the total life-cycle cost.
Pitfall 8: Failing to request IES files. Without IES files, it is impossible to perform lighting simulations or guarantee the actual performance of the installation.
Avoiding these pitfalls will help you select the LED streetlights that are truly the best fit for your needs.
