The pole height (H) and spacing (S) should be determined based on a combination of factors, including road width, luminaire light distribution, and illuminance requirements. General principles are as follows:
Pole Height: Typically 0.8 to 1.2 times the road width (W). For single-sided arrangement, H ≥ 0.8W; for staggered arrangement, H ≥ 0.7W; and for central, double-sided (opposing) arrangement, H ≥ 0.5W. Common pole heights are: 12–15 meters for expressways, 10–12 meters for arterial roads, 8–10 meters for secondary roads, and 6–8 meters for local/branch roads.
Spacing: S is generally 3 to 5 times H. For LED street lights with Type III light distribution, an S/H ratio of approximately 4 typically yields good uniformity. Specific values: for a 12-meter pole height, the spacing should be 30–40 meters; for 10 meters, 25–35 meters; and for 8 meters, 20–30 meters. At intersections, curves, and ramps, the spacing should be reduced or the pole height increased accordingly.
Arrangement Patterns: Single-sided (for narrow roads), staggered (for medium-width roads), symmetrical (for wide roads), and central, double-sided (for roads with a median/divider). Once the pole height and spacing are determined, they must be verified through lighting simulation software to ensure that metrics such as illuminance, uniformity, and glare meet the required standards. Additionally, the surrounding environment—such as obstructions from trees or buildings—and aesthetic considerations should be taken into account.
For retrofit projects, existing pole locations should be utilized whenever possible, though illuminance levels must be recalculated.
