What are the specific waterproofing requirements for installing LED stadium lights?

Since LED stadium lights are exposed to the outdoors for extended periods—enduring harsh conditions such as sun, rain, snow, condensation, and dust—waterproofing and dustproofing are fundamental requirements. The specific requirements are as follows:

First, the ingress protection (IP) rating must be at least IP65, meaning the fixture is completely dust-tight and resistant to low-pressure water jets. For areas frequently subjected to heavy rain, typhoons, or high-pressure washing (such as track cleaning at racing circuits), an IP66 rating (protection against powerful water jets) or even IP67 (protection against temporary immersion) is recommended.

Second, sealed structural design. Housing joints should feature multi-layer sealing (e.g., silicone rubber O-rings combined with sealant). Cable entries must utilize waterproof cable glands (PG or M types) equipped with internal clamping rings and gaskets.

Third, breathers or waterproof ventilation valves. As LEDs generate heat during operation and create negative pressure upon cooling, they can easily draw in moisture. High-quality fixtures incorporate waterproof ventilation valves (using ePTFE membranes) that allow air exchange while blocking liquid water and dust, thereby balancing internal and external pressure and preventing condensation.

Fourth, drainage holes. Even with tight sealing, trace amounts of moisture may seep in over time due to seal aging. Some fixtures feature drainage holes at the bottom (designed with a labyrinth structure) that allow condensed water to drain out while preventing external water from entering.

Fifth, corrosion resistance. Sealing materials should be UV-resistant and aging-resistant silicone or fluororubber, rather than standard rubber. In coastal areas or near chemical plants, fixture housings should be made of marine-grade aluminum alloy (e.g., AlMgSi1) or stainless steel, with passivated or powder-coated surfaces. During installation, cables should be arranged with a "drip loop" (U-shape) to prevent water from running along the cable and into the fixture. Before the rainy season, the sealing integrity of the fixtures should be inspected, and any aged seals replaced promptly.

In summary, waterproofing performance is directly linked to the reliability of the lighting fixtures and must not be overlooked.
