Why do LED stadium lights flicker?

Flickering in LED stadium lights is almost always caused by electrical or control issues rather than the LED chips themselves (LED chips are DC devices; as long as the current is stable, they do not flicker). Common causes and solutions include:

First, poor quality or faulty LED drivers. Low-quality drivers may exhibit high output ripple, or internal capacitor aging can lead to unstable output voltage. Solution: Replace with a high-quality brand-name driver (e.g., Mean Well, Inventronics, Philips).

Second, voltage fluctuations. Stadiums often contain inductive loads such as large air conditioners, water pumps, and motors; their startup and shutdown can cause momentary voltage dips or spikes in the power grid, preventing the driver from maintaining a constant current output. Solutions include installing a voltage stabilizer or active filter in the distribution box, or providing a dedicated power supply circuit for the lighting system.

Third, dimming signal interference. When using 0-10V dimming, if the dimming lines are excessively long or run parallel to high-voltage power lines, they can pick up noise, causing brightness fluctuations. Shielded twisted-pair cables should be used for dimming signals and routed away from power lines (with a separation of at least 30cm).

Fourth, excessively low PWM dimming frequency. Some LED drivers use PWM dimming; if the frequency is below 1000Hz, the human eye may not notice it, but high-speed cameras will capture visible rolling bands (flicker). Drivers with a PWM frequency of ≥3000Hz should be selected, or CCR (Constant Current Reduction) dimming methods should be used.

Fifth, DMX512 signal issues. Failure to install a 120Ω termination resistor, or using cables that are too long or have too many branches, can cause signal reflection and random flickering. Proper wiring and the installation of termination resistors are required.

Sixth, poor contact. Loose internal wiring terminals or oxidized connectors can cause intermittent open circuits. Retighten or replace the terminals. To troubleshoot flickering, it is recommended to use an oscilloscope to observe the driver's output waveform and systematically isolate the problematic fixtures.
