The IP (Ingress Protection) rating is defined by the IEC 60529 standard and measures the ability of an electrical device's enclosure to protect against the intrusion of solid foreign objects and liquids. The "IP" designation is followed by two digits: the first (0–6) indicates the level of dust protection, and the second (0–9K) indicates the level of water protection. Higher numbers signify a higher level of protection.
For LED floodlights—particularly those designed for outdoor use—common ratings include IP65, IP66, IP67, and IP68.
IP65: Completely dust-tight (Level 6) and resistant to low-pressure water jets from any direction (Level 5); it can withstand rain or rinsing with a standard car-wash sprayer but cannot be submerged in water.
IP66: Completely dust-tight and resistant to powerful water jets (Level 6); suitable for coastal areas, docks, or locations requiring frequent high-pressure washing.
IP67: Completely dust-tight and capable of withstanding temporary immersion in water up to 1 meter deep for 30 minutes without damage; suitable for flood-prone areas, though long-term submersion is generally not recommended.
IP68: Completely dust-tight and capable of continuous immersion in water deeper than 1 meter (specific depth and duration are specified by the manufacturer); suitable for underwater lighting applications such as fountains and swimming pools. When purchasing, one should not rely solely on the IP rating; the quality of the housing material and the longevity of the sealing gaskets are also critical factors.
For instance, the gaskets on a low-cost IP65 floodlight might harden and crack after a year of outdoor use, allowing water to enter and cause damage.
Additionally, IP ratings do not indicate corrosion resistance. In environments such as chemical plants or coastal areas, salt-spray and corrosion resistance require special attention; housings typically need to be made of marine-grade aluminum alloy or stainless steel and treated with specialized coatings. For standard residential garden use, an IP65 rating is sufficient; however, for parking lot lighting directly exposed to heavy rain or car-wash environments, an IP66 rating or higher is recommended.
