Are LED floodlights better with motion sensors?

Equipping LED floodlights with motion sensors (also known as infrared or microwave sensors) can significantly improve energy efficiency and convenience, but whether it's "better" depends on the specific use case.

Motion sensors are highly valuable in the following situations:

Home entrances, garages, back doors, hallways, stairwells: Lights automatically turn on when someone walks by and turn off after a delay when they leave, providing security (preventing fumbling for keys in the dark) and avoiding the waste of electricity from lights on all night. In these scenarios, sensors can effectively reduce lighting time by more than 90%.

Parking lots, warehouse passageways, factory visitor corridors: These areas rarely see people but occasionally require lighting; using sensors can significantly save energy.

Security lighting: In conjunction with cameras, the sudden activation of floodlights can deter potential intruders. However, sensors may not be ideal in the following situations:

Plazas, building facade washer lighting: These places require continuous lighting to showcase effects or to provide basic lighting throughout the night for security; using sensors would lead to frequent light switching, which appears unprofessional.

Streetlights or residential roads: If the sensors are too sensitive, even a rustling leaf or a small animal passing by can trigger them, causing frequent switching on and off, which not only disturbs residents but also shortens the lifespan of the lights. Therefore, a better solution is to choose adjustable sensors: those that allow adjustment of the delay time (from a few seconds to a few minutes), sensitivity (detection range), light control threshold (no light during the day), and a "dual-mode" operating mode (low brightness for energy saving when no one is around, full brightness when someone is present). Additionally, microwave sensors are more sensitive than passive infrared (PIR) sensors and are unaffected by temperature, but they may penetrate walls and cause false triggers.

If you need continuous 24-hour lighting, do not buy a model with a sensor, or choose a model that supports "always on/sensor-activated" switching.
