How much energy does an LED floodlight save compared to a traditional floodlight?

The energy-saving effect of LED floodlights is very significant, and the energy saving percentage depends on the benchmark type compared to traditional lighting fixtures.

Compared to halogen lamps, LED floodlights save approximately 80% to 90% of energy. For example, a 500W halogen floodlight emits approximately 8000 lumens (luminous efficacy of approximately 16 lm/W), while achieving the same brightness requires only an 80W high-efficiency LED floodlight (luminous efficacy of 100 lm/W). This means that operating for 3000 hours per year, a halogen lamp consumes 1500 kWh, while an LED consumes only 240 kWh, saving 1260 kWh. At 0.8 yuan/kWh, this translates to an annual electricity saving of approximately 1008 yuan.

Compared to metal halide lamps, LED floodlights save approximately 50% to 70% of energy. A 1000W metal halide lamp system (including ballast losses) consumes approximately 1100W and has a luminous flux of about 90.000 lumens (luminous efficacy of about 80 lm/W). To achieve the same lumen output, an LED floodlight would require approximately 700W to 800W (calculated at 120 lm/W). However, considering the significant uplight loss and low efficiency of metal halide lamps, in practical applications, 500W to 600W LEDs often achieve the same road illumination. This means that a metal halide lamp consumes approximately 3300 kWh per year, while an LED with the same effect consumes approximately 1800 kWh, saving 1500 kWh. Furthermore, metal halide lamps require periodic bulb replacements (approximately once a year), while LEDs do not, saving labor and material costs.

Compared to high-pressure sodium lamps, LEDs offer similar energy savings, but high-pressure sodium lamps have extremely poor color rendering (CRI≈20). If the goal is to increase illuminance to obtain better color, the energy-saving advantage of LEDs becomes even more pronounced. In summary, replacing a traditional floodlight with an LED floodlight typically recoups the initial investment in the lighting fixture within 1-3 years (through electricity savings), with subsequent years resulting in pure savings. For large commercial or municipal lighting projects, the annual energy savings from upgrading to LED floodlights can reach hundreds of thousands or even millions of yuan.
