Can LED floodlights be used for underwater lighting?
LED floodlights can be used for underwater lighting, but specially designed and certified underwater luminaires must be selected. Ordinary IP65/IP66/IP67 floodlights cannot be used underwater. Specific requirements for underwater lighting include:
First, the protection rating must reach IP68. IP68 means the luminaire can operate continuously at a certain depth without water ingress. The tolerable water depth must be clearly indicated (e.g., "IP68 up to 3m"). IP67 can only be submerged in 1 meter of water for a short period (maximum 30 minutes) and cannot be used for permanent underwater installation.
Second, the material must be completely resistant to water corrosion. The housing should be made of 316L stainless steel, copper alloy, or marine-grade aluminum alloy with a special coating.
Third, the sealing structure must be reliable. Underwater lights typically use potting compound sealing or a double O-ring design, and the cable must also use a special watertight connector.
Fourth, electrical safety. Underwater lighting must use extra-low voltage (SELV), typically 12V or 24V AC/DC. Never use 220V directly, as this could lead to fatal electrical leakage. An isolation transformer and a residual current device (RCD) are also required.
Fifth, light color selection. Water absorbs the spectrum, especially red light, which is absorbed quickly. Therefore, underwater lighting typically uses blue, green, or cool white light. Warm white light will quickly turn red and dim underwater.
Applications: Fountains, swimming pools, aquariums, underwater landscape lighting, water parks, etc. If you simply want to add some lighting to your fish tank or small fountain, it is recommended to purchase a dedicated 12V LED underwater light, rather than trying to "modify" a regular floodlight into an underwater light. When purchasing, look for the IP68 and SELV markings. Never use 220V lights underwater; safety first.
