Motion sensors (PIR or microwave) used with LED floodlights can achieve "lights on when people are present, lights off/dark when people leave," significantly saving energy and improving convenience. Typical operating logic: The sensor detects human (or object) movement, triggering the floodlight to illuminate fully (or reach a preset brightness); after a set delay time (e.g., 30 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes), if no further movement is detected, the light returns to off or low-brightness standby mode. Combined with a photosensor, it can also achieve daytime non-triggering (light control function).
When purchasing and installing, the following points should be noted:
First, sensor type: PIR passive infrared sensors are inexpensive but sensitive to ambient temperature, potentially causing false alarms or underreporting in summer; microwave sensors have strong penetrating power and are unaffected by temperature, but may penetrate walls to detect movement from adjacent rooms, requiring sensitivity adjustment.
Second, installation location: The sensor should be installed in a location that covers the area to be detected, avoiding obstruction by obstacles. A typical sensor has a fan-shaped detection range, approximately 90°–180°, with a distance of up to 10 meters. An installation height of 1.8–2.5 meters is recommended; higher installations will reduce the ground detection range.
Third, parameter adjustment: Good sensors have three adjustable knobs: SENS (sensitivity), TIME (delay), and LUX (light control threshold). LUX is used to set the brightness level for daytime operation; for example, setting it to the "sun" symbol indicates operation only after dark.
Fourth, avoid accidental triggering: Do not point the sensor at swaying trees, air conditioner vents, or areas frequently visited by cats or dogs. You can reduce the sensitivity or adjust the direction.
Fifth, compatibility: If dimmable LED floodlights are already installed, a sensor with a 0-10V dimming output can be selected to achieve two-level dimming: 10% brightness when no one is present, and 100% brightness when someone is present. This is more energy-efficient than simple on/off switching and will not startle people. During installation, ensure the sensor is at least 0.5 meters away from the light fixture to prevent heat from the fixture from affecting the sensor's operation.
