Do LED floodlights require regular cleaning?

Yes, LED floodlights require regular cleaning; otherwise, contaminants such as dust, dirt, and insect debris can significantly reduce light output and impair heat dissipation. The cleaning frequency depends on the installation environment: in clean residential yards, cleaning every 6 to 12 months is sufficient; in dusty areas like factories, roadside locations, or construction sites, cleaning every 3 months is recommended; and in environments with sticky dust or oily residue—such as livestock farms or flour mills—monthly cleaning may be necessary. The cleaning procedure is as follows:

First, disconnect the power and ensure the fixture has cooled down completely (wait at least 30 minutes after it was last lit) to avoid burns.

Second, external cleaning: Wipe the glass lens and housing with a soft, damp cloth (optionally moistened with a small amount of neutral detergent). Do not use strong acids, strong alkalis, or organic solvents (such as acetone or gasoline), as these can damage the sealing gaskets and surface coatings. For stubborn stains, use a soft-bristled brush to scrub gently. Never use steel wool or hard objects, as these can scratch the glass or damage the waterproof seal.

Third, cleaning heat dissipation fins: Use a small brush, an old toothbrush, a vacuum cleaner (with a brush attachment), or compressed air (at a pressure not exceeding 5 bar) to remove dust and debris from the gaps between the fins. This step is crucial, as dust accumulation acts like insulation, hindering heat dissipation.

Fourth, check seals: After cleaning, inspect the sealing gaskets for integrity, check the glass for cracks, and ensure the cable gland is not loose. Replace or tighten components as necessary if damage is found.

Fifth, drying after cleaning: If a damp cloth was used, allow the fixture to dry completely (or use a hairdryer) before reconnecting the power to prevent moisture from entering the unit. Regular cleaning not only maintains high brightness but also extends the lifespan of the fixture. Some manufacturers offer self-cleaning nano-coatings that delay dust accumulation, but these cannot completely replace manual cleaning.
