While LED floodlights are more energy-efficient than traditional lights, they still have certain requirements for the power supply circuit to ensure safety and performance.
First, voltage matching. Most LED floodlights are designed for wide voltage input (100-277V AC, 50/60Hz), compatible with most global power grids. However, some products only support 220V or 110V; confirm voltage matching with your local voltage before purchasing. Prolonged voltage exceeding the maximum nominal value (e.g., 277V) will damage the driver; insufficient voltage will cause the lights to fail to start or produce insufficient brightness.
Second, circuit load capacity. LED floodlights do not have the inrush current of traditional lights when starting (because the driver has a soft start), but the total current when multiple lights are started simultaneously must not exceed 80% of the circuit breaker's rated value. For example, 20 100W floodlights with a total power of 2000W will draw approximately 9A at 220V, requiring a 10A or 16A circuit breaker.
Third, leakage protection. Outdoor lighting circuits must be equipped with residual current devices (RCDs) with a recommended operating current of 30mA and an operating time of less than 0.1 seconds. This can quickly cut off the power supply in the event of a leakage current in the light fixture, preventing electric shock.
Fourth, Surge Protection. LED drivers are sensitive to lightning strikes and power grid surges. It is recommended to install surge protectors (SPDs) in the distribution box, Type 2 or Type 3, with a nominal discharge current of at least 10kA. In areas prone to lightning, it is best to equip each light with a parallel surge protection module.
Fifth, Wire Selection. Select cables with appropriate cross-sections based on current and distance. For example, a 220V 1000W light fixture draws approximately 4.5A; for a distance of 100 meters, it is recommended to use 2.5mm² copper wire to reduce voltage drop. When the line is too long, the voltage drop should be calculated to ensure that the voltage at the light fixture's input terminal is not lower than 85% of the nominal value.
Sixth, Grounding. All metal-cased LED floodlights must be reliably grounded, with the grounding wire having the same diameter as the phase wire. Do not connect the ground wire to the neutral wire.
Seventh, a dedicated lighting circuit. It is not recommended to share the same circuit with other inductive loads (such as motors or air conditioners), as voltage spikes during start-up and shutdown may damage the driver. It is best to run a separate cable from the distribution box. Following these requirements can significantly reduce the failure rate.
