A high-mast light is a large-scale lighting system mounted on a tall pole—typically exceeding 15 meters in height (and reaching up to 45 or even 50 meters). A lighting assembly (or "headframe") is installed at the top, equipped with 4 to 16 (or more) high-power luminaires. These systems are designed to provide uniform, high-intensity illumination over expansive areas, such as major transportation hubs (highway interchanges, toll plazas, airport aprons), port terminals, railway freight yards, large public squares, sports stadiums, open-pit mines, and military bases.
Compared to standard streetlights (typically 6–12 meters tall), high-mast lights leverage their height to cover larger areas with fewer poles while minimizing issues related to light obstruction and glare. Key structural components include a tapered or polygonal steel pole (usually hot-dip galvanized for corrosion resistance), a fixed or lowering lighting assembly, luminaires (traditionally high-pressure sodium or metal halide, now predominantly LED), an electrical control system, and a lifting mechanism (for lowering-type models).
Lowering-type high-mast lights allow the lighting assembly to be lowered to approximately 2.5 meters above the ground, facilitating maintenance, cleaning, and replacement without the need for aerial work platforms, thereby significantly enhancing safety. Modern LED high-mast lights offer over 50% greater energy efficiency and a lifespan three to five times longer than traditional HID models, while also featuring smart dimming and remote monitoring capabilities. Selecting the right high-mast light requires considering various factors, including pole height, wind resistance, light distribution patterns, the reliability of the lifting mechanism, and lightning protection and grounding systems.
