What is the difference in color temperature between LED high-mast lights and high-pressure sodium (HPS) lamps?
Color temperature is the most immediately noticeable difference between LED high-mast lights and HPS lamps.
High-Pressure Sodium (HPS) Lamps: These emit an orange-yellow light with a very low color temperature, typically ranging from 1900K to 2100K. This type of light renders objects in a monotonous yellowish-brown hue, making it difficult to distinguish colors (with a Color Rendering Index, or CRI, of only 20–25). For instance, red and orange objects appear almost identical, while white objects take on a yellowish tint. This is highly disadvantageous in environments like ports and airports, where the rapid identification of container codes and license plate numbers is essential.
LED High-Mast Lights: These offer a range of color temperature options, with the most common being 4000K (neutral white), 5000K (cool white), and 5700K (daylight white). These color temperatures provide true-to-life color rendering (CRI ≥ 70, typically ≥ 80), allowing for the clear distinction of color details. For ports and airports, 5000K–5700K is recommended because the human eye is more sensitive to contrast at higher color temperatures, facilitating quick identification. For plazas near residential areas, 4000K might be chosen to minimize the impact of blue light.
Additionally, LED high-mast lights are available with adjustable color temperatures, allowing the light color to be switched based on the scenario (e.g., using warm white light at night to minimize disturbance to residents, and switching to cool white light during operations to boost efficiency). In short, LED high-mast lights offer far greater flexibility regarding color temperature than HPS lamps.
