What is the typical lumen output of an LED floodlight?

The lumen (lm) is the SI unit for luminous flux, representing the total amount of visible light emitted by a light source per second. For LED floodlights, the lumen value directly determines illumination capability.

Generally, the typical luminous flux for LED floodlights at various power ratings is as follows: 10W is approximately 800–1,100 lumens (depending on luminous efficacy); 20W is about 1,600–2,200 lumens; 30W is about 2,400–3,300 lumens; 50W is about 4,500–6,000 lumens; 100W is about 9,000–13,000 lumens; 200W is about 20,000–26,000 lumens; 500W is about 55,000–70,000 lumens; and 1000W is about 100,000–140,000 lumens. Specific values ​​are influenced by factors such as the luminous efficacy of the LED chips, drive current, optical lens transmittance, and operating temperature.

For instance, a high-end LED chip with a nominal efficacy of 150 lm/W might actually deliver only 120 lm/W when operating at full load with a junction temperature of 85°C. When purchasing, one should request data on lumen maintenance—tested according to LM-80 or similar standards—from the manufacturer. For practical applications, the required lumen output can be estimated simply: for a 100-square-meter courtyard requiring an average illuminance of about 50 lux (sufficient for typical courtyard activities), the total required lumens would be approximately 100 m² × 50 lux ÷ utilization factor (typically 0.5) ÷ maintenance factor (0.8) ≈ 12,500 lumens. This is equivalent to one 100W high-efficiency LED floodlight or two 50W floodlights. In contrast, sports venues requiring high illuminance (such as small soccer fields) may require upwards of 200,000 to 500,000 lumens. In short, before making a purchase, it is best to run a simulation using lighting design software (such as DIALux) or request an IES file from the supplier to view illuminance maps, rather than guessing the brightness based on intuition.
