Go with spotlights, not floodlights. A floodlight throws a wide, even beam that washes over everything—great for a backyard or driveway, but in a kitchen it’ll leave your counters flat and shadowless. That sounds nice until you realize you can’t see into a pot or under a cabinet lip because the light has no direction. Kitchens need contrast and focus: you want to see what you’re chopping, not just a dull glow from above.
Spotlights give you that focus. Use them as recessed downlights over key work zones—sink, stove, prep area. If you have an island, hang a couple pendant spotlights. For upper cabinets, small adjustable spotlights underneath make a real difference. The trick is aiming: keep light where your hands are, not splashed across the whole room. Mix in a few general lights if the room feels dark, but for real usability, spotlights win every time.
