A lowering-type high-mast light is a design in which the luminaire assembly (or "lamp carriage") can be raised and lowered along the interior or exterior of the mast using an electric or manual winch. Its core advantages are ease of maintenance and enhanced safety.
How it works: Guide rails or guide cables are installed along the mast, and the luminaire assembly is connected via steel cables to a winch located at the base. When maintenance or replacement is required, an operator controls the winch from the ground to release the cables; gravity allows the assembly to descend slowly to a height of approximately 2.5 meters above the ground (a locking mechanism is typically included to prevent accidental falls).
After maintenance, the winch operates in reverse to lift the assembly back to the top, where it is automatically secured by hooks to prevent it from falling in the event of a cable failure. These lights are primarily used in locations where frequent maintenance is needed or where access for aerial work platforms is difficult—such as highway interchanges (high traffic volume, difficult to close roads), ports (severe salt-spray corrosion, frequent luminaire failure), and freight yards (uneven ground, preventing aerial vehicles from positioning correctly).
Key components of the lifting system include: the winch (featuring a self-locking function and usually a backup manual crank for power outages); steel cables (multiple independent cables, each capable of supporting the full weight of the assembly, equipped with cable-break protection); a cable separator (to prevent tangling); guide pulleys; and an anti-fall device (typically mechanical hooks or electromagnetic brakes).
When purchasing a lowering-type high-mast light, key factors to consider include the safety factor of the steel cables (at least 5:1), the winch's ingress protection rating (IP55 or higher), the availability of a manual lifting function, and the smoothness of the lifting operation.
