L70 lifespan is a common standard in the lighting industry used to measure the service life of LED light sources or luminaires. It is defined as the number of operating hours it takes for an LED luminaire's luminous flux to depreciate to 70% of its initial value under specific operating conditions. For instance, if an LED stadium light is rated "L70 ≥ 50,000 hours," it means that under normal usage conditions, the light output will remain at or above 70% of its initial brightness after 50,000 hours. Why is 70% chosen as the threshold? Because the human eye is not highly sensitive to changes in brightness; most users only clearly perceive that "the light has dimmed" when brightness drops to 70%.
Stadium lighting requires high illuminance and uniformity, so the L70 lifespan is typically required to be at least 50,000 hours; organizations such as FIFA mandate even longer lifespans, often exceeding 60,000 hours. It is important to note that L70 is not an absolute guarantee but a figure derived from statistical analysis and accelerated aging tests (such as the LM-80 standard). Actual lifespan is influenced by various factors, particularly junction temperature—reducing the temperature by 10°C can roughly double the L70 lifespan. Consequently, LED stadium lights with superior thermal management designs can easily achieve an L70 rating of 100,000 hours.
Other standards exist as well, such as L50 (depreciation to 50% of initial output) and L90 (depreciation to 90%, a stricter metric). When purchasing stadium lights, one should request LM-80 test reports from third-party laboratories and L70 values calculated based on TM-21, rather than relying solely on figures found in marketing materials.
