The Color Rendering Index (CRI) measures a light source's ability to accurately render the true colors of objects. For stadium lighting—especially in venues hosting televised broadcasts—a CRI of 90 or higher is required (with the R9 value typically needing to exceed 50). The reasons are as follows:
First, the need for athlete recognition. During fast-paced action, athletes must accurately distinguish between the jersey colors of teammates and opponents (e.g., red vs. maroon, blue vs. green) and track the ball (such as the black-and-white panels of a soccer ball or the yellow of a tennis ball). If the CRI is too low, colors may blend together, leading to errors in judgment.
Second, color fidelity for television broadcasting. High-definition and ultra-high-definition cameras are highly sensitive to the color rendering capabilities of light sources. Low-CRI lighting can cause skin tones in the broadcast to appear greenish or purplish, distort the color of the turf, and misrepresent the colors on sponsor billboards, thereby severely impacting the viewer experience and commercial value.
Third, visual comfort for spectators. High-CRI light feels more natural and comfortable, reducing visual fatigue. This is crucial for spectators watching matches over extended periods.
Fourth, requirements for slow-motion and close-up shots. Details are magnified during slow-motion replays; if color rendering is poor, elements such as athletes' facial expressions and the spin texture of the ball become blurred.
Fifth, compliance with event organizer requirements. Organizations such as FIFA, FIBA, and UEFA explicitly mandate that venues hosting their events must use lighting systems with a CRI of 90 or higher. Consequently, LED stadium lights generally utilize high-CRI LED chips and employ spectral optimization technology to boost the R9 value.
When purchasing, one should look beyond the standard Ra value and also check the R9 (deep red) value; it is recommended that R9 be no lower than 30, with 50 or higher being ideal. If a manufacturer can only provide products with Ra ≥ 80, those lights are suitable only for training or recreational use, not for official matches.
