LEDs run cooler because they convert most energy into light, not radiant heat. Still, the driver and LED chips themselves produce enough heat to shorten their life if you don’t manage it. That’s why any decent LED high bay has a big finned aluminum heat sink or a passive cooling design. The heat sink pulls warmth away from the chips and dumps it into the surrounding air. Touch the housing after eight hours of run time—it’ll feel warm to the palm, maybe 120°F to 140°F, but you won’t blister. Compare that to a metal halide where the lens can hit 300°F and start fires if dust builds up.

Surface temperature depends on the fixture’s design and ambient room heat. A cheap high bay with skimpy heat sink will run hotter and die younger. Good ones keep the case below 140°F even in a 105°F warehouse. That’s still too hot to hold onto for long, but safe enough for most industrial settings. The real takeaway: they don’t radiate heat downward onto people or products like old lights do, so you’re not sweating under them.
