LED high-mast lights offer significant energy savings compared to traditional HID (High-Pressure Sodium or Metal Halide) lights, typically reducing energy consumption by 50% to 75%. Consider a typical highway interchange: the original design utilized twelve 1,000W high-pressure sodium lights (with an actual power consumption of approximately 1,100W per unit, including ballast losses), resulting in a total power load of 13.2 kW. Operating for 12 hours a day, the annual electricity consumption was 57,816 kWh. By switching to twelve 500W high-efficiency LED lights (with a luminous efficacy of 150 lm/W and an actual power draw of 500W), the total power load drops to 6 kW, and annual consumption falls to 26,280 kWh. This represents an annual saving of 31,536 kWh, or an energy reduction of 54.5%. If the original HID fixtures were older models (with a luminous efficacy of only 70–80 lm/W), the energy savings from LEDs could exceed 70%.
Beyond direct electricity costs, LEDs also reduce expenses related to air conditioning (as HID lights generate significant heat, raising ambient temperatures in summer) and labor costs associated with frequent bulb replacements. For large-scale facilities like ports or airports—which may operate dozens or even hundreds of high-mast lights—the energy-saving impact is substantial.
For instance, after retrofitting its high-mast lights with LEDs, Shanghai’s Yangshan Port saved over 2 million RMB annually in electricity costs while significantly reducing maintenance requirements. Therefore, although the initial investment for LED high-mast lights may be 30% to 50% higher than for HID systems, the cost is typically recouped through energy savings within two to four years, resulting in net savings thereafter.
