How do you choose the height of a high-mast light?

Selecting the height of a high-mast light requires a comprehensive assessment of lighting coverage, illuminance requirements, site constraints, cost-effectiveness, and conditions for installation and maintenance.

The following are general guidelines based on common scenarios:

15–18 meters: Suitable for small plazas, toll stations, gas stations, and parking lots; coverage radius is approximately 30–40 meters.

20–25 meters: Suitable for medium-sized highway interchanges, railway freight yards, and industrial parks; coverage radius is approximately 50–70 meters.

25–30 meters: Suitable for large interchanges, auxiliary sports fields, and general port storage yards; coverage radius is approximately 70–100 meters.

30–40 meters: Suitable for large container terminals, airport aprons, and main sports stadiums; coverage radius is 100–150 meters.

Above 40 meters: Suitable for massive sites or special applications requiring extremely high illuminance (e.g., F1 circuits or open-pit mines); however, due to high construction costs and maintenance difficulties, this is generally not the preferred option.

The guiding principle for determining height is to select the lowest possible height that still meets illuminance and uniformity standards. This is because every 10-meter increase in height raises the pole cost by approximately 30%–50%, necessitates a larger foundation, and increases the difficulty of high-altitude maintenance. Conversely, a height that is too low requires a greater number of poles (due to the smaller coverage radius) and increases the risk of glare. The optimal height should be determined by comparing multiple options using lighting design software. Additionally, factors such as aviation height restrictions (near airports), the height of surrounding buildings, and visual harmony with the landscape must be considered.
