Although LED floodlights and LED streetlights may look somewhat similar, they differ significantly in terms of design philosophy, light distribution curves, and installation methods.
First, the light distribution patterns differ. Streetlights must meet strict requirements for roadway lighting, typically employing asymmetric light distribution (such as Type II, III, IV, or V) to direct light primarily onto the road surface and ensure uniform illumination between poles. In contrast, floodlights usually feature symmetric light distribution (producing a circular or elliptical beam) that spreads light evenly in all directions, making them suitable for illuminating specific surfaces or areas.
Second, installation methods differ. Streetlights are typically fixed to the tops of poles, pointing in a set direction (usually along the road), and cannot be easily adjusted. Floodlights, however, are equipped with U-shaped brackets that allow for wide-angle adjustments of the beam direction, offering greater flexibility.
Third, anti-glare design. Streetlights often require shields or cut-off optics to minimize glare for drivers. Floodlights generally do not have strict anti-glare requirements, though baffles may be added in certain applications.
Fourth, application scenarios. Streetlights are designed specifically for roads, streets, and highways, whereas floodlights are used for buildings, plazas, sports fields, billboards, and similar sites.
Fifth, power range. Streetlight power typically ranges from 30W to 300W to cover long stretches of road. Floodlight power ranges from 10W to over 1000W, offering a much broader spectrum.
Sixth, control methods. Streetlights often integrate smart control systems (such as dimming based on time or traffic volume); while floodlights can also incorporate smart controls, it is not a standard requirement. Despite these differences, the two can sometimes be used interchangeably: in small plazas or parks, streetlights can serve as landscape lighting, and floodlights can provide temporary roadway illumination, though the results may not match those of dedicated streetlights.
