Why are LED stadium lights installed at such great heights?

LED stadium lights are typically installed at heights ranging from 15 to 45 meters (often on catwalks atop the stands, corner light towers, or high masts) for several key reasons:

First, to achieve uniform illuminance distribution. Light propagation follows the inverse-square law—doubling the distance reduces illuminance to one-quarter of its original level. If fixtures are mounted too low, the area directly beneath them becomes excessively bright while the edges and far ends of the field remain very dark, resulting in poor uniformity. Elevating the fixtures reduces the relative difference in distance to various points on the field; combined with narrow beam angles and precise aiming, this ensures relatively uniform illuminance across the entire playing surface (professional competitions require a uniformity ratio greater than 0.9).

Second, to minimize glare. The higher the fixtures are mounted, the closer the angle of light entering the athletes' eyes is to the vertical, thereby reducing direct horizontal glare. International sports lighting standards (such as EN 12193) specify maximum mounting heights and minimum tilt angles—generally requiring a tilt angle of no less than 15° to 25°—to prevent light from shining directly into the eyes of athletes and spectators.

Third, to avoid obstruction and collisions. High-level mounting prevents collisions between the fixtures and players (e.g., during high-arcing soccer passes or basketball dunks) or equipment (such as pole-vaulting poles or badminton shuttlecocks).

Fourth, to expand the coverage area of ​​individual fixtures. A narrow-beam floodlight mounted at a great height can cover a vast area, thereby reducing the total number of fixtures required and lowering both initial investment and long-term maintenance costs. Of course, there are limits to mounting height: excessive height increases atmospheric light attenuation (especially in rainy or foggy conditions) and raises the costs and complexity of constructing light masts. Consequently, the mounting height for stadium lights is typically determined through comprehensive analysis using professional lighting simulation software (such as DIALux).
